Glacial grooves formed thousands of years ago are deep striations remnants of the last magnificent Northern Glacier more than 10,000 years ago. The well-preserved grooves are fascinating to children and adults alike! The research that is performed on the island can vary from holding tanks for aquatic organisms to more energy-efficient forty- four 240-Watt solar panels that provide energy. They also offer the power to provide the hot water that needed for their dining hall and housing. The small rocky island of Gibraltar was named after its resemblance to a famous fortress at the western end of the Mediterranean Sea. At one time, it was the summer home to Civil War Financier Jay Cooke around the middle to the late 1800s. To visit Gibraltar island, visitors must meet at the Boardwalk Restaurant dock where they are able to get on a Put-in-Bay water taxi round trip departing from Put-in-Bay.
Things to See And Do in the Gibraltar Tour Area
Just up the road is the Put-in-Bay Winery Close to the departure point for the Gibraltar Island Tours and a beautiful place to experience Put-in-Bay as is was many years ago. Known as the historic Dollar House, it was formally owned by Valentine Dollar. It has been restored to its former glory, including correct period furniture, and is now the home to the winery. Tastings and Tours are offered daily. Heading to the west, the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club is a popular venue for Powerboat Regatta and the Sailing Regatta, held each year in July and August. Bayview Gifts, is located across from the Crews Nest Restaurant & Club is a popular place to buy boating-related garb and is along the waterfront.
