The Valentine Doller House

The Doller House was initially owned by one of the island’s first entrepreneurs, Valentine Doller. The meticulously restored property is a fascinating look into Put-in-Bay’s past. This Italianate style architectural wonder sits right on Lake Erie with stunning views of the Put-in-Bay harbor and Gibraltar Island. Visitors can tour the island life museum and Doller House while visiting the Put-in-Bay Winery.

The Doller House is easy to spot with its yellow and gray brick and wood construction. It was built in two sections — one half is wood, and the other added in 1883, was red brick until painted.  The Italianate architecture is accentuated by the tower at the front corner of the structure.

Valentine Doller was a German immigrant who arrived at Put-in-Bay in 1859. He built a general store where the Mossbacks Restaurant and Fishbowl stand today. He also ran the local island Post Office. Doller is perhaps best remembered for his thriving ice business. During those harsh winter months on the island, Doller would harvest ice directly from the lake. He would then store the blocks in the ice house to sell. The only public dock on the island for many years was also owned by Doller

The Doller House is also available for private parties. The waterfront setting offers stunning views of the waterwhile and the backyard is great for dancing. A gazebo is for large events is available. A full catering menu is avaialbe and can accommodate parties anywhere from 10 to 60 guests. Contact the Put-in-Bay Winery to discuss your party plans.
