The History Of Put-in-Bay Restaurants

Since the 1800’s, Put-in-Bay Restaurants have always been trendsetters early on. The Beebe House and the famous Victory Hotel boasted dining rooms seating over 500 people. In early Put-in-Bay History, steamships would bring visitors to Put-in-Bay by the thousands to enjoy the resort island, and Put-in-Bay Restaurants were an essential part of the equation.

Over the years, most of the original Put-in-Bay Restaurants, such as the Colonial, were destroyed by fire or converted to another use. Ironically most of the restaurants at Put-in-Bay today began their life as something else! The current location of Mossbacks Restaurant was once the Put-in-Bay Hardware Store. The Old Forge began it’s life as a blacksmiths shop and then for many years was a gift shop. The Put-in-Bay Brewery once was home to the Put-in-Bay Volunteer Fire Department and is now the only distillery located on an island in Ohio!

Along Delaware Avenue, the main strip,  the Frosty Bar, was once a dry goods store. The T&J’s Smokehouse was a hotel and then known as The Crescent Restaurant operated for many years by the Stoiber Family. The Goat was once a winery and then ran as Daily’s Tavern by the family of legendary Pat Daily, a famous Put-in-Bay Entertainer for many years. Be sure to venture into the interior of the island where you will find Joe’s Bar. The self-proclaimed king of dive bars!

The wide diversity of food offered at Put-in-Bay Restaurants has evolved over the years, and present-day offers just about every popular food one would desire. The General rule of thumb for the dress is resort casual. Many of the local restaurants rely on seasonal workers to help staff and care for the large crowds that vacation at Put-in-Bay each season.

Restaurants at Put-in-Bay face unique challenges in their operation in that all products must be brought to the island by ferry boat. This includes all liquor beer & wine (except those produced locally) Aside from the added expense of transportation, careful planning of inventory levels is critical. Restaurants running out of an item is not an option when restocking means a lengthy and expensive trip to the mainland! Be sure to enjoy some freshly caught Lake Erie Yellow Perch or Walleye, a regional favorite served at many restaurants and Put-in-Bay Hotels!

Put-in-Bay Restaurants Literally Have Something For Everyone

The Keys Restaurant is the sister property to the Boardwalk. It’s located on the other side of the Put-in-Bay docks. This Key West-inspired menu is packed with fresh fish such as Grouper, Mahi Mahi, and Pink Shrimp. The specialty drink menu and craft beers are always a hit. As with the Boardwalk, the Keys does not disappoint with views of the Perry Peace Memorial & the waterfront.

Are you Hungry Yet? The Chicken Patio next to the Round House Bar grills wine-basted chicken.  The secret sauce is a big hit, and you can get just the chicken or a whole meal at Roundhouse Bar.  Nearby, Pasquale’s Café has one of the best breakfast menus on the island.
