The Put-in-Bay Brewing Company and Distillery History

The building that houses the Put-in-Bay Brewing Company building is over one hundred years old. This stately brick building sits on property owned initially by Valentine Doller, a Put-in-Bay Founder. He was one of the island’s wealthiest and most influential citizens and a vital part of Put-in-Bay History. Doller held many important positions, including as the community’s third mayor. His island home is now the Put-in-Bay Winery.

In 1898, “Bennie” Rosenfeld constructed a small wooden building, the first on the site. It served as a dry goods store. After a fire destroyed the building, the new owners, the Rittman Family built the building we see today. Over the years, the building served a variety of functions and has gone through several expansions.

The Rittman’s opened a grocery store in the first portion of the house and then began a garage. Eventually, Put-in-Bay Township purchased the building for the Put-in-Bay Fire Departments island fire station.

Carl and Chris Krueger purchased the building in an auction in 1995 to open a brewpub and distillery. Since opening in 1996, the business has expanded to include an enclosure in the rear, an open-air patio, and a dance floor.

2013 saw the addition of a beautiful new fermentation still to the already impressive collection of copper. Put-in-Bay has a long tradition of winemaking. It can finally add a distillery producing island rums and liquors.
